ENGLISH INTERVIEW AT THE END

No me gustaba.

Vete a eBay y gástate 15 euros.

Chris: *risas*

RetroManiac: Siempre hago la misma pregunta.

Chris: No. ¡Sí!

RetroManiac: ¿Puedes darnos alguna exclusiva?

Chris: No pasaría nada.

Entonces puedes crear tu propio mapeado, ir a nuestra web y subirlo.

ENGLISH INTERVIEW STARTS HERE

RetroManiac: Why did you decide to go with the Spectrum Vega’s actual design?

Chris: So, we did a lot of different 3D printings and gave them to people, and they're going, "it's plastic". They also tend to rattle (RATTLE SOUND). So then we did it with rubber, and it felt so much better, more expensive. Also, people thought, "oh, it's just like the Spectrum!". So, that's why.

RetroManiac: What makes the Spectrum Vega a better option to play Spectrum games than an emulator?

Chris: The Spectrum Vega is designed with a format that people today are used to.

RetroManiac: Is it easy to set up?

Chris: Just plug it in your television. The power is on the USB, a 5 Volts USB. Lots of TVs these days have USB, so you just plug it in and there you go. If your TV doesn't have USB or it doesn’t have enough power, as the USB lead is separate, you can plug the Vega to your TV and to your USB phone charger, and there you go. You give that to a teenager, and they will just use it; if you give an emulator to a teenager, they will run the program but then they will go, "what do I do now?"

RetroManiac: So, it’s a more straightforward experience.

Chris: Yeah. That's a modern format. We deliberately did not do a joystick even though I knew there were lots of games you can play with a joystick, but it is not as good. If you need to play a game like Manic Miner, where you have to be very, very precise, a joystick's no good. A gamepad is much better.

RetroManiac: I had a joystick but I never used it. I didn't like it.

Chris: Yeah, everyone had one. So, that's why we did that. And there's no keyboard because we wanted to be playing games. We're thinking about having a keyboard extension, but if you want some keyboard to plug into a TV that's as small as an Spectrum, buy a Spectrum. Go on eBay and spend 15 euros. We already have those. So, this is a different thing. But we may have a PS-2 or something keyboard extension in the future.

RetroManiac: Are there many women fans of the Spectrum?

Chris: I don't know!

RetroManiac: My next question: being a Spectrum superstar, do you have more success with women?

Chris:*laughs*

RetroManiac: I always ask the same question.

Chris: No. Yes! All of this makes them go to sleep. So, if I don't want to hear them anymore, I just talk about the Spectrum.

RetroManiac: Can you give us an exclusive for RetroManiac Magazine? Tell us a new piece of information?

Chris: Well, being here is already an exclusive. The Spectrum Vega has never been demonstrated before. Nobody has ever used... Ok, we have testers, professional people testing, and we have some end users, but it's a small, trusted set of people, because we don't want any news to go out, as we're about to release it.

RetroManiac: Are you concerned about the exclusivity of your product, then? What happens if one Spectrum Vega falls into my pocket?

Chris: Nothing would happen. It is all encrypted, so you wouldn’t be able to copy it.

RetroManiac: You said people will be able to create their own mappings for a specific game. Will we be able to share those mappings for other people to use them?

Chris: You will, on our website. Suppose you create your own mapping for a game. You can put it on Google or Facebook or something, and it'll have your name saying you created that mapping. So another person can go to our website and look at the mappings; and there's the standard mapping, and there's your mapping. She may say, “oh, no, I like that one better”. So she just downloads it and she will be playing with your mapping. So that's the idea. It's having a community, because if you take the time to do a mapping, you’ll want to share it.

RetroManiac: Ok. So, the objective is to make the 14.000 Spectrum videogames available?

Chris: Yes, there are some 14-15.000 games.

RetroManiac: I mean, the key maps.

Chris: So, you can go to World of Spectrum, download a game that you like, but there's no key map. So you can create your key map, go on to our website and upload it. If I then come along afterwards, I can go to our website and get the key map. Games that people give us the licenses to use, we'll put the key maps on our website to download; other games you can go and get from somewhere else. But we will give you the functionality to create your own mappings.

RetroManiac: It is said that english people think we didn’t know how to make good games in Spain.

Chris: Yeah, you did (laughs) Like Bugaboo the Flea. There's many, many good Spectrum games made in Spain.

RetroManiac: Not that many. Games made by Dinamic, Opera, Topo, Zigurat... but not much more more.

Chris: I remember Sir Fred, which was by Made in Spain, and Bugaboo the Flea.

RetroManiac: What about La Abadia del Crimen? It’s a spanish game based on Umberto Eco’s book, The Name of the Rose. A very good adventure game.

Chris: I don't know that game.

RetroManiac: England had companies like Ocean and Ultimate. Market leaders. In comparison, Spain had a very small industry.

Chris: Well, Spain invented the 128k Spectrum, so that's fine. You gave us something.

RetroManiac: Thank you, Chris.

Chris: A pleasure.
